Abstract

Exploring what is possible often revolves around developing creative ideas. This paper explores externalisation of creative ideas across four dissimilar domains of professional creative practice: design, graphics, music, and science. Drawing upon studies that combine surveys (n=200) and semi-structured qualitative interviews (n=60), we investigate how professional creative practitioners externalise their ideas. Central to our inquiry is the currently limited understanding of the tools employed in these externalisation processes and the nuanced strategies the practitioners employ. By examining how ideas are collected in ‘idea archives,’ and how tools are utilized when capturing and developing creative ideas, this research contributes novel insight into the role and nature of idea externalization in professional creative practice. Findings from this study are discussed with a focus on the study’s relevance to creative practitioners in various domains and its interdisciplinary implications for future research on the role of tools in creativity and innovation.
